Subject: Amateur Boxing on Saba

October 20, 2009 (SGIS) – The Bottom, Saba:

Last week, Commissioner of Sports Bruce Zagers met with Mr. Genghis Khan, Dean Johnson, and Milton Ottley and his advisor from the Sint Maarten Amateur Boxing Club Association. This meeting involved promoting the sport of amateur boxing on Saba.

Mr. Khan has been actively involved with this sport on Saba for over a year by starting with a group of three young men. Currently, he has grown his numbers to 10 youths. Khan and his team practice three times a week in the gym. Part of the training involves the boys doing endurance training on their off days.

Last year one the students participated in an event on the French side and did surprisingly well, taking into consideration there was little preparation or experience. This proves that our island has potential in this sport.

Saba will start an amateur boxing club in the near future. An association will be started to further establish amateur boxing on the Island. Once the association has been formed, the Saba group can become affiliated with the Sint Maarten Amateur and Professional Boxing Association. The advantages of joining this association will afford people the opportunity to be part of seminars and invitations to different bouts. The Sint Maarten Association is a member of the IBA (International Boxing Association).

Zagers stated that, “There are plans for an official launch of amateur boxing during the Saba Day celebrations. The Government will financially assist in purchasing a floor ring that can be used for practices and exhibition bouts. “ Zagers went on to say, “I fully support the initiative taken by Mr. Khan and I look forward to hearing more about these kind of positive outlets for our youth.”

This year Saba Day will be celebrating its 34th Anniversary with a reception and diverse entertainment for the weekend. An official ceremony will be held on December 4th, 2009 and as well as a reception for the general public.

Recently, Commissioner of Culture Bruce Zagers met with President of the Saba Cultural Foundation Lisa Hassell to discuss how the plans for Saba Day are progressing. This year the Government will be handling the official part of Saba Day such as the mass, hoisting of the flag, cultural dances, as well as speeches and awards handed out by the Commissioner of Culture. Following the ceremony a reception is being held for dignitaries as and the general public.

The Saba Cultural Foundation has been tasked with hosting the cultural booths along the Matthew Levenstone Road, bringing in entertainment, the Annual Wahoo Tournament, target shooting, and working with other Foundations to hold activities for children.

The Wahoo Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday on December 5th and 6th. The Foundation elicited that they are looking forward to participation from the local islands to make it another Grand event.

Currently, the Foundation has set an outline and is sending out letters to all stakeholders involved in Saba Day. Lisa Hassell stated to GIS, “As a Foundation we look forward to working closely with outside organizations to make this year another success”.

Commissioner Zagers is urging local businesses and community to come forward in helping make this year a memorable as well. “I hope to see everyone showing their patriotism while coming out to support Saba Day. Plans are well underway and people can expect another fulfilled event this year.” stated Zagers.

Saba gearing up for Carnival 2009

March 24th, 2009

Subject: Saba gearing up for Carnival 2009

March 24, 2009 (SGIS) – The Bottom, Saba:

The Bottom, Saba – The Saba Cultural Foundation is currently busy with preparations for the island’s 33rd celebration of its Saba Summer Festival in the latter part of July. Public Relations Officer, Chulani Levenstone informed GIS that “plans have been underway since the early part of January to ensure that events and troupes were coordinated efficiently.”

According to the Cultural Foundation, three troupes have officially signed up though it is anticipated another one or two would before June. In addition to the troupes only one night has been purchased by a promoter. Levenstone expressed concern about this situation and would like to encourage any other willing promoters, local or international, to contact the foundation if they are interested in providing entertainment during the week by the advertised deadline on March 31st. “

On March 31, the foundation will meet to go over the requests and finalize the program line up, as well as, troupe participation.  Commissioner of Culture, Bruce Zagers, stated that he “looks forward to the event and hopes that the community can throw in their support to make it a huge success”
